FREYGANG history : East Germany and the rockn'roll scene

It is common knowledge that during this period one needed 'connections' and/or hard currency if one wanted to get into the business. It is also well known that, aside from the 'official' route, there were some lone musicians who made it on their own. Lust for life, inner creativity and the need to communicate spurned them on. ANDRÈ GREINER POL is such a musician. Working out of the 'Prenzlauer Berg' district in East Berlin, he became the driving force of the band FREYGANG which he founded in 1978. Blues and Boogie was at the top of their agenda.
He realized early on that the groups provocative lyrics, their charismatic appearance and energy created an explosive blend which fascinated audiences. He and the band learned how to manipulate and interact with his fans. They loved FREYGANG for its courage to freely express themselves.
Because of their popularity the state pulled the plug on the group and outlawed them.
Some of the members were imprisoned. Times got hard for the rock music scene. Today, after 28 years of performing against the odds FREYGANG's music, having reached cult status, appeals to free spirited followers.
The concerts are one giant party with audience and band exchanging their affection for each other. FREYGANG attempts to form a personal relationship with every member of the audience.
By now young second generation fans as well as old hardliners make up the majority of the groups following. For many FREYGANG has long been an institution and represents a source of energy for free thinking.

IF EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT IT WOULD'NT BE THE SAME.

Some times in life a person has the privilege to transform himself from being 'just a person' into a human being. In the first case, a man with the trivial name Mr. Pol would be living in a nondiscript flat and he might as well be a nondiscript number, accessible upon demand.
However this male individual, Mr. Pol, must, without doubt, in a former life, have been kissed by a primeaval rage.Hence his life turns out quite differently and the monotony of one plus one equals two is broken.
Controlled by an irrational fact, he uses his voice and begins to manipulate a distorted guitar.
The outcome is the unmistakable sound of blues of a European soul brother.
If you open your mind and senses you experience FREYGANG, a survivor band founded in the 70's whose kids were not gobbled up by the Stasi. The band takes credit for aggressively pursuing freedom of speach and expression in former East Germany. Audiences would shout in unison: "Give us Pol, dead or alive!" This became a standard demand for 'neo-cannibalists' across the board all the way to long haired "Ton Steine Scherben" freaks, a rarity at the time. People of all shades pursued the German/European thought, individuals who sought their future in André Greiner - Pol's distorted guitar quicksand of undisciplined rock`n'roll. This band is far beyond right or wrong, good or bad.
It provokes by insulting, ridiculing and putting down audience and state.
This band will remain human as long as they are able to sweat.
